Italian restaurant opens in Galena

A new Italian restaurant has opened on Galena’s tourist-heavy Main Street.

Cucina Bella recently opened at 125 N. Main St. The restaurant serves a variety of authentic Italian cuisine and is the sister location to the original Cucina Bella, which has operated for nearly 20 years in Algonquin, Ill.

“We want to bring a true, authentic Italian restaurant to the people of Galena,” said owner Tony Colatorti. “A lot of our (Algonquin) regulars have moved out this way, and we want to continue to serve them and everyone else in the (Galena) area.”

Manchester couple's ice cream offers unique flavors, high quality

In a quiet Manchester neighborhood, Joe and Elizabeth Mullen might just be making some of the most delicious ice cream in some of the most unique flavors an ice cream connoisseur is apt to find.

Since starting Mima’s Old Fashion Ice Cream last year, the couple’s ice cream can be found at Off the Hoof in Delhi, Bushel & A Peck in Manchester, at area farmers markets on the weekends and at NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Making strawberry jam with the remaining berries, he added some honey balsamic vinegar and some black pepper for a strawberry balsamic ice cream.

Can-do attitude: Local craft-beer scene remains strong after decade of growth

A vintage vinyl record spun around a turntable behind the bar at Jubeck New World Brewing on a recent Friday night as customers chatted across the taproom. Creedence Clearwater Revival performing live long ago pumped out of speakers as Johnny Carlson poured craft beers into glasses and mugs.

“It’s very cozy here,” said the bartender. “There’s no TVs so it makes it easy to catch up with people. We have tons of records and people are bringing them in all the time.”
